I did a presentation at the Garlic and Arts Festival in Orange Massachusetts this past weekend on home energy efficiency. For it, I prepared a slide comparing light bulb costs. The title of my slide on the topic became "Congratulations LED's! You Did It!" Why? On Amazon, you can now by LED's that are so cheap that they pay themselves in about 6 months! Here is a chart that shows off all the details:

I can't speak to the TCP bulb's attributes personally so I included the Philips bulb which I love (although lamp shades that attach to the bulb don't always sit right). I have about 20 of them in my house.

I created the above chart before I new about the proposed November electrical rate increase (see previous post). If rates go up to 23 cents per kW the TCP bulbs pay for themselves in 4.7 months instead of 6.4.

Links to purchasing bulbs:
GE Incandescent (Amazon 4 Pack)
GE CFL (Amazon 8 Pack)
TCP LED (Amazon 6 Pack)
Philips LED (EFI Single Bulb)

Last week we learned that Massachusetts National Grid electric rates will be rising by a very large 37% starting in November. According to the news, other utilities including WMECO and Nstar will soon be following suit. Industry sites power plant closures and increased reliance and demand on natural gas for the rise in cost.

At this new rate, a typical household with an electric water heater will spend $1000 per year heating potable hot water! Installing a solar hot water system can easily drop that down to $200 per year. At Spartan Solar, we can provide you with all the information and assistance you need to make an informed decision. We can also advise you on many other ways to reduce your energy bills including heat pumps, pellets, solar PV, and insulation.
